Your chair creaks as you roll down the tunnel towards the Assembly Dome, the only creaky thing in a community with fifteen 3D printers running 24 and a half hours a day. But you've always refused upgrades to your old chair, prefering to see those printers working towards building for the community, for the future. \n\nYou never expected to live long anyway, especially after being shot. You certainly didn't expect to outlive Patrick, but here you are, on your way to honour the first anniversary of his passing. More people would be at this gathering than any single event ever held on Mars, barring his wake. Almost 200 people. \n\nThey still haven't forgotten: he was a hero. Those who came in on the SpaceX ships and the descendents of the CASC crew knew they had him to thank for their lives and their families. His name would be on their lips for a long time still.\n\n"A hand, Mrs. Jones?" Your son-in-law, Aiden McCarthy, takes up your chair and helps you down the corridor. You pat his hand.\n\n"How's Sammy?" you ask. She has been on bedrest for a month, but the end is coming soon. Gestational patterns have been odd on Mars, but nobody has ever gone past 44 weeks. \n\n"Grouchy," Aiden says. "I mean, with reason," he adds. "We're ready for the baby is all."\n\n"Are you still going to name her Jennifer?" you ask.\n\n"If it's a girl." Aiden pauses. "I know we'd talked about Obasi for a boy, but-" You wait. "If it's born tonight... don't you think we should name him Patrick?"\n\nYou grin. "Yes. I do."\n\nTHE END\n
"Every person in the world is beautiful and talented and would offer something unique to the Mars colony, Patrick," you tell him, trying to look kind. "No matter who I choose, billions of others will die who do not deserve to. That's what is going to happen. We can't do anything about that." You pause to see if he's listening, buying it. He's crying again, so you assume your words are hitting home. "The only thing we can do - the only thing we have time to do - is pack up the best people we can and get off this planet before C/2019-41 gets here."\n\n"What if these aren't the best people?"\n\n"They won't be. But they are going to be the best people I can get. You can help me with that. Find me the best candidates. Help me save the best of humanity, Patrick. This is about who we can save, not who we can't."\n\nPatrick nods. You let your body language betray the slightest impatience. Now, Patrick. We have to do this now. He gets it, and [[takes the pad from you.|the second choice.]]
It has been four days and twelve hours since your first child died. Your first grandchild too, though the little thing outlived Sammy by two hours. The funeral is in an hour. \n\nYou feel genuinely old for the first time in your life. Ella has one of your arms and Patrick the other as you make your way down the softly-lit corridors of Eirene, and you feel you need both of them to keep from falling. Death in childbirth is nothing new - not on Mars, and not back home - but this is your first. It hurt when the community lost Helena, and Suki and Estraja; but this was different. Sammy was yours. Your little girl.\n\n"It will be beautiful, Mom. The Maestro himself will play. Elsie's class has prepared a special song-"\n\n"Will you be singing, Ella?" you ask your only child. She tears up.\n\n"I can't. I just... can't. But everyone else will, Mom. Every one of us."\n\nMusic has always been sacred to the people of Eirene, ever since those long months in the colony ships where there was so little else to do but sing and grieve and remember and sing. Nowhere was Earth's richness better preserved than in song. Your children turned out to be gifted vocalists, but Sammy in particular. Everybody had loved Sammy. The Wake Chamber would be packed full with almost every one of the fifty people in the community.\n\nYou will gather in the Wake Chamber and sing to remember that you still live, despite everything. You've spoken at every Wake since Landfall; reminded your people that Eirene persists, humanity persists - even grows, albeit slowly. Life here is happy, if hard. You try to remind them that it can only get better. So long as you remember. \n\nYou won't speak this time, but you will remember. Sammy, Earth, everyone.\n\nTHE END

Homebound 1 through 6 are prototype colony ships developed by Utopia Corp, scheduled to begin manned trips to Mars in 2024. Test "camping trips" to the Moon have been successful.\n\nThese ships are meant to be user-friendly "colony kits" for a largely civilian ridership. At their core are Utopia's patented StoneSpinners, 3D printers which can "spin" powdered mineral into desired forms. The ships convert into ready-on-landing habitation pods which connect via glassteel tunnels. The landing kit includes a medical lab, greenhouse, recreation space, power and atmosphere systems, as well as water & waste filtration systems. Also included are Ark Libraries containing DNA samples from comprehensive Earth lifeforms and the digitized contents of the Harvard University Library System. \n\nEach of the six Homebound ships are built to support six people. Utopia staff and family already quarantined at the Reno campus will fill 30 of the 36 spaces available on these ships.\n\n[[Back.|$return]]

The StoneSpinner whirrs to a stop and Ella withdraws the final tile from the delivery carriage. It fits perfectly into the corner of her little pod, the last piece of a mosaic floor that has taken her two years to construct.\n\n"So?" she says, grinning at you. "Pretty great, right, Mom?"\n\nYou can't deny it's beautiful. Ella designed each tile in the pattern, printed them all out individually. Disks of pink geothite are fitted with iron sigils, poised between pale quartz whorls. Ella spent every one of her shifts with the StoneSpinners making these, forsaking more practical upgrades to her habitation pod. \n\nIt's beautiful, but you can't say you approve. The Spinners should be put to better use, building components of new pods for colony expansion. But that would take planning on a larger scale, and it would mean the Spinners would have to be left under the control of a central planning authority, rather than being shared throughout the community. So instead of a new medical pod, you have mosaic floors. \n\n"It's nice," you say. Ella rolls her eyes at you.\n\nElla was 4 when the ships landed on Mars. She doesn't remember Earth, though she claims to remember the five month voyage here. She, like so many of the colony children, finds the small spaces comforting. \n\nHomestead feels to you like a well-appointed cave. You remember conseptual designs of wide open spaces capped with glassteel domes, expansions to the greenhouses that were supposed to come to include tilapia ponds, chicken farms and trees; a view to terraforming. Those designs have been forgotten by all but a few old Utopia employees. Most people are content to live in the little maze of colony pods, entrenched and enriched with love and care. Homestead is a cozy place, but you miss the golden ages of Earth, when you could command the labour of millions to build great things.\n\nHomestead's population is 82 people. \n\n"Come on," Ella moves to the Spinner. "I have to take this to Sammy & Aiden's. They're working on a new bed for little Jen." That brightens your mood. You help Ella lift the Spinner and begin the short trip down the hall to the next pod. \n\nShe isn't an auditorium or a foodball field, but your first granddaughter is the best measure of progress you have ever known. Robust, happy, and loved, she is a life.\n\nTHE END\n\n

You get off and turn your back to the 'copters, blocking the causeway with your body. "Come on!" you yell, waving someone's partner with two kids in his arms towards you. \n\nHe jumps off the bus and runs for the first ship, calling to those behind him. Nobody fires. They tumble off the bus in pairs and groups then, stumbling after their leaders towards their assigned ships. The whump whump whump of state-of-the-art 'copter grows closer and closer until you have to look. [[Almost everyone is off.]]

"I never thought this would work."\n\n"Never thought what would work?" you ask. Obike shrugs and gestures around the hall, at the runners, the lights, and the red world beyond the glassteel dome. \n\n"This. Utopia. The colony. Mars."\n\nYou stop midstride, speechless. Obike continues.\n\n"I thought, you know, we'd starve. We'd freeze. We'd go crazy and tear each other to pieces. Best case scenario, I thought we'd dwindle. I'm proud of you. You made this work."\n\nYou're still stunned by this little speech, the most reflective thing your husband has said in thirty years. You decide to fake offense.\n\n"You didn't think I could do this? With all the money Utopia spent, the hundreds of geniuses involved in the development-"\n\n"-Leo, Leo, please. You know what I meant. I just wanted to say it before we got to the ceremony, before you're busy again. This shouldn't have worked, but you made it happen. I'm proud of you."\n\nYou glance at him side-eyed and keep walking, mollified. "And the new wing? Do you think that will work?" It took five years to build, but Utopia is expanding for the first time since the colony's founding. New habitation pods, a new cafeteria, and an amphitheatre - the biggest open-contained space you've attempted yet. About time too. Utopia has more than twice as many people as it did when you landed thirty years ago.\n\nObike laughs. "I think the amphitheatre dome will collapse. But you've proven me wrong before! I'm going to the ceremony, aren't I? If the dome cracks and we're all suffocated, we'll die together and I'll get to say 'I told you so' with my last breath."\n\n"How did I get so lucky?" you say dryly. \n\nYou've come to the airlock that used to lead to the construction site - the door that will soon be opened for the first time into carved Martian stone steps descending towards a round stage, into the light of the largest glassteel dome you've ever built. There is a small crowd there - the familiar faces of humanity. They have waited for you to open the door for them. \n\nYou take the bolt and twist. The door swings open into the future.\n\nTHE END

"Mom! Mom!" You wake at the first urgent whisper. You fumble for the light, but Sammy's hand intercepts yours. "No. They don't know we're here."\n\nYour bowels go cold. In the pitch black, you feel the soft flesh of little Jen's calf dangling from Sammy's arms. Why isn't she in her crib?\n\n"The tests came back," Sammy mutters into your ear. "Cystic fibrosis."\n\nYou sit up in bed. Sammy has done the right thing, if Jen's genetic scan came back with CF. She might not even have until morning before Big Red came for them. Not only would Jen be declared unfit, but Sammy and Aiden would be pulled apart. Ella might be subjected to tests or worse as well. CF was a huge black mark on their genetic profile. Best case senario, Big Red would never let any of them breed again. Worst case...\n\n"You told me to come to you," Sammy tries to keep her voice low, but it's breaking up with fear. "If her tests came back bad. You have a plan, right Mom? You can do something?"\n\nNew Terra is so tiny a space. Only five new pods had been constructed since landfall - five in thirty years - and all five were controlled by the Reds for the Marsian Training and Education program. The children were well-kept there, taught a gauntlet of elite techniques designed to bring out perfection in the human form. Red graduates were impressive - and terrifying - examples of humanity. If they were fit to enter in the first place, which little Jen was not.\n\nBig Red would know about Jen's test results. You briefly consider hiding the child, but every inch of New Terra was known intimately to all 90 of her inhabitants. There was nowhere to hide a person.\n\nBut Jen wasn't the first child to come up with a negative genetic profile. Only the first to be born with a grandmother wth a talent for planning.\n\n"Take Aiden and go to Ainslin's pod," you tell Sammy. "I'm going to go get Ella. Tell Ainslin I said to show you the SubSpinner. That it's time to assemble the Greens."\n\n"What?" Sammy sounds mystified, so you give her a shove towards the door. \n\n"Do it," you hiss. \n\nSammy does what she is told, and Ainslin acts as quickly. By the time you have escorted Ella thorough the tark tunnels to the McCarthys' pod, six other people have joined you them. The only light in the pod is coming from a space below Ainslin's breakfast table where you know there is a subpod chamber and an illegal StoneSpinner.\n\n"We're all here," Ainslin tells you, and all eyes turn towards you. \n\n"It's time," you tell them. "We have three atmosphere suits and all the components ready for assembly. We have five hours before sun-up. Patrick and Zander are going to take the Spinner and a rover out a back exit via the subpod. They will clip together the new Pod over by the Sunrock and activate atmosphere systems. Then we will run members over there two at a time, known dissidents first. If we're not moved out by sun-up, the Sleepers will delay any Red in our quarter."\n\n"But won't they just follow us?" Sammy stutters. "They'll see the door and take rovers out to our pod. What's the point?"\n\nYou kneel next to the subpod and reach under the latch. You withdraw an iron barrel.\n\n"We're not hiding," you reply, screwing the barrel into a firing mechanism. "We're digging in. Sunstone is where we're making the stand."\n\n"War," Sammy says, although she has only heard the word in stories. You nod. It's close enough.\n\n"Only if they insist. But I didn't save Humanity just so someone else could condemn part of us. We need to get our of their fist first. We'll see what comes next."\n\nThe room shimmers with silent nodding. The first fight for your new world has come, and you are going to lead it.\n\nTHE END
You open the drawer of your desk with a quick prick and a DNA scan. Patrick is so busy ranting that he doesn't realize you're taking a pistol out; removing the safety. The cinematic click fails to catch his attention.\n\n"Patrick." You keep your voice low, force him to listen. He notices then that you have a gun trained on him, and wets himself.\n\n"Why.... why bother?" he asks, starting to shake. That is shock. "I'll be dead in 48 hours anyway."\n\n"Because I don't trust you not to tell. I can't have you ruin our chances at launching. I can't risk someone breaking in here and taking our ticket off this doomed rock."\n\n"Earth."\n\n"Yes, you're very human. Cookies for you. But you can't see the big picture and you can't do what you're told, so you're a liability."\n\n"You're a monster."\n\n"Maybe, but I am going to save humanity. I'm sorry, Patrick. I don't see another way."\n\n[[["Now get in the corner."|Blackmail]] [[[Pull the trigger.]|Boom]]

Now, I want you to get back in the database and find me-"\n\n"But we could tell somebody. The UN. Governments. I dont know, Richard Branson. Maybe they can help. Maybe they have ships of their own. We can't sit on this information!" Patick is growing hysterical. He hasn't taken the pad from you.\n\n[[["We can not tell anyone."]|Forge Ahead.]][[["Telling anyone is risky..."]|Wavering]]

To: Jones, Dr. Leona \nFrom: Astrophysics @ Reno\nDate: 15-10-2019\nSubject: URGENT observation\n\nDr. Jones,\n\nAt 3:22am on Tuesday, October 15th, 2019, Drs. Ainslin McCarthy & Donald Chung made the following observation while on shift at the UTO Space Telescope Institute on Utopia Campus, Reno, Nevada.\n\nC/2019-41, a significant asteroid first spotted by the new Ceres 'Scope last March, has changed course. We do not have the time nor data available at this time to establish why. C/2019-41 is now on a collision course with Earth.\n\nGiven the distance covered by C/2019-41 since last March, we estimate the asteroid will impact Earth's stratosphere in no more than 36 hours. C/2019-41 has the mass necessary to rip the planet apart. We have not modelled the exact extent of the likely damage, but there is no scenario in which the Earth would be left habitable. This is a big one.\n\nPlease advise immediately.\n\nSincerely,\n\nDrs. Most of the crew are up and ready anyway, unable to sleep through the last of their time on Earth. "Sit here, Mom." Sammy scoots over, little Jen in her lap, to make space for you on the cold floor of the Assembly chamber. You take her hand to help lower yourself, joints raging, into an awkward sprawl. Your knees don't bend right anymore, nor your hip flexors. It's the cold, you've always known. Like rubber, your body needs a little heat to stay pliable. There is no spare heat to be had in Terroire.\n\n"Did you put your name forth this year, Mrs. J?" Sammy's husband, Aidan, asks. Sammy shushes him. Nobody is supposed to know until they announce the candidates, but for the first time in thirty years, you didn't put your name in for Assembly consideration. \n\nToo old, you told Obike, but the truth of it is, you're just not interested. You haven't been genuinely interested in governance for fifteen years, but you kept stabbing at the seat out of spite. To show those old crones that you weren't going to just give up and be quiet. They might have turned everyone in the colony - yes, it's a colony, despite what you preach - against you, but you were still three times the leader any of them were, and you'd remind them of that each and every voting cycle - even if you never won the vote.\n\nBut not this year. The grudge had finally worn off. Maybe it was the birth of Jen or the fact that your youngest, Ella, had won a seat herself last cycle, but you just didn't care anymore. Terroire wasn't your Utopia, but it had turned out all right. Last year, the population had finally doubled. Everybody was fed, housed, and clothed. Terroire's children didn't know what they were missing when their projects weren't approved, or when they were assigned partners, pods, or tasks. They didn't know what freedom - not the freedom you had known - was. The important thing was survival.\n\n"It's okay, Mom," Sammy whispers. "You made the right decision." She places a hand on your knee and Jen leans in to grab a dangling lock of your hair, pulling mercilessly towards her mouth. Sammy gasps and scolds her, trying to disentanlge tiny baby hand from ropey hair. \n\nYou laugh. "It's all right, it's all right." You take the infant from her mother and give her a fatter lock to chew on. You want to hug her right into your belly, you love her so much. How could there be room for grudges anymore? Babies were born here - more every year. Humanity lived. What was a little cold, some hunger from time to time? You were all in this together.\n\n"Hush," someone says. The Assembly's three heads file into the room and kneel before you, the Herald following them. In her hands is a tablet with the candidates' names. You don't listen when she reads them out. \n\nTHE END\n

Ella is due to have her first child today. Your first grandchild.\n\nElla was slow to come around to the idea of children. The confines of the colony seemed to crush her when she was younger, and she believed for a long time that this was no place to raise a child, no place to have a life. You tried to bouy her spirits by telling her it wouldn't always be like this, that her children, or their children, would have more. The 3D printers were spinning out expansions 24 and a half hours a day. \n\n"More what, Mom?" she had shot back, so angry. "More tunnels? More pods? More of this unending sameness? I don't want more. I want different."\n\nYou'd tried to explain that the uniformity she hated was the key to the colony's functionality. Everything plugged in to everything else. The bugs came pre-fixed by Utopia's team back on Earth. The new expansions - the tilapia ponds, the daycare - were built on the same principals to the same design. Functionality over form: that's why everything functioned.\n\nElla didn't care. Not her priorities.\n\nYou don't know when she got pregnant, or by whom - assuming she didn't just go to Dr. Ransom's bank. Suddenly she just was. \n\n"What changed?" you asked her. She shrugged.\n\n"I'm going to fix this myself," she said, which you have been suggesting for years. "My child is going to be different. We're going to do things differently." \n\nShe said it like a threat, but you can only smile. Good. Things will be different for the next generation, and the next one. You've spent thirty years barely hanging on, the last remenents of humanity hanging on to a colonial vision forged decades ago on another planet. The Marsborn kids see a totally different place.\n\nIt worked. Mars colony - the Marsborn called it Podtown - was now a hundred and fifty robust, healthy people. It wasn't pretty, but you were alive. \n\nAnd if Ella and her children do things differently? Maybe it will be pretty some day too.\n\nTHE END

<<if $Blackmail is "Yes">>Patrick said nothing for the first week after launch. You didn't think anything of it. The first day was too full of tears, hysterics, and collapse. By day two, wrung out and drained, people started reaching out to learn about their new neighbours. Video terminals were left open continuously. Somebody was almost always chatting with somebody else from another ship. But not Patrick. You didn't see him once.\n\nAt the beginning of the second week of your voyage, <<print $EMPTY3>> confronted you in your cabin. "I've been talking to Patrick Chin," they said. "We have a problem."\n\n"'We'?" you asked.\n\n"Yes. All of us." They looked at you pointedly. "Including the pilot."\n\nYou didn't need to ask what that meant. They had been talking behind your back - every single member of the colony. These people who did not know you - who owed you their lives - decided you were a monster and a tyrant. That you needed to be "dealt with" now, before the ships landed on Mars. \n\nThe pilot had exclusive full-system access to the ship, unless you could get into his cabin and log in to your own profile. Nobody was keen to help you do that - not even your husband.\n\n"This is just temporary," Obike said, obviously scared. "Just stay in your room like they want. We'll sort it out after we land. They can't keep you locked up forever. Not with so few of us. They're just angry. It will pass."\n\nThat was five years ago. They did everything without you. The landing, the pod assembly, the community meetings and the Constitution. They formed a Triad - as if you could split power over 3 dozen people three ways! But they did. Nobody asked you. You were not allowed to speak. You were confined to your pod for five long, hard years.\n\nBut Obike had been right. It did pass. On the 5th Anniversary of the colony's founding, the Triad asked to see you. Nobody had been to see you except, in the early days, your husband; and more lately, just your daughters. You were starved for company, and you agreed.\n\n"We need you," they admitted. "There are too few of us to let one of our best and brightest languish in prison."\n\nYou could have cried then. You wanted to spite them, refuse for the five years you had lost. But that wasn't the kind of person you were. You were prepared to see the job done.\n\n"Is everything alright?" you asked, aware only of Sammy and Ella's child-like versions of events. \n\n"Yes," said the leader, her look softening. "After all - you chose well. But we can do better. If we all pull in the same direction."\n\nSo they let you out.\n\nTHE END\n<<elseif $DeadPat is "Yes">>"Where's Patrick?"\n\nEveryone is looking at you. You can't even tell them he has another place to be, some other obligation. He's either here, or he's dead. If not by your hands, then when the rest of the world goes. \n\n"We have to board. We only have an hour or two wiggle room. We go now."\n\n"What have you done with my son?" Mrs. Chin asks, more angry than upset. Everybody waits. You don't have time for this.\n\nYou pull the gun out of your pocket and everybody moves at once, like a swarm of ants. Everybody but Mrs. Chin, who still hasn't moved.\n\n"Everybody get on the bus," you tell them, pointing the gun at Mrs. Chin. We're going out to the ship yards. We are going to get on those ships. We are leaving."\n\nA few people shout and others cower. Mrs. Chin still doesn't move. "You are bringing a gun?" she says. "You killed him. You killed my son."\n\nHer stoicism seems to be rubbing off. People group up again, closing ranks in front of Mrs. Chin. You assume a firing stance, to show them you are serious.\n\n"I wasn't going to bring the gun," you start, then stop. It's too late to try to defend yourself. "Obviously, I need it to keep you idiots grounded. If we don't get on that ship, it won't be me that kills you. Move. Now."\n\n"Put down the gun, Leona." It's your husband, Obike. You ignore him too.\n\n"I'm going to count to three," you say, like you have to with your kids. "One-"\n\nSomebody in the front lunges. You don't have time to register who. One of the pilots, probably. Military type. You drop the barrel and fire towards the ground, but there's a fist flying towards your face and when it impacts, you can't tell the crack from gunshot. You go down like a bag of sand, face down. You hear screams, shouts, cries, movement, and chaos while your head spins. You seem to have let go of the gun. That's bad.\n\n"Mrs. Chin! Mrs. Chin!" Voices repeat the old woman's name, some urgently, others desperately. You wonder why nobody is helping you up. You're unarmed now, for God's sake. \n\nYou get your bearings enough to push your cheek off the ground and spit some blood. You turn and look over your shoulder.\n\nMrs. Chin stands over you. They're right on top of you, circling for somewhere to land. You wonder why they haven't shot you to pieces yet, then realize it isn't you or the children they're afraid of hitting, but the ships. \n\nThe last of your crew leaps off the bus and you bolt after them towards your ship and your family. "Set a press conference for one hour," you tell Patrick. "No hint of what this is about. Tell them we've made a discovery. And get all quarantined crew on those ships now. I want them fueled and ready to launch before the press get here."\n\nPatrick only nods, but his mood has obviously improved. By the time the press arrives an hour later, he is almost chipper. After twenty-four hours of locking people down, obsessing over data and grieving over the end of the world, the regular hum and excitement of the oblivious press is a welcome fantasy. \n\nYou take your place at your podium, wearing the same rumpled sweater and jeans you were wearing when Astro called you in before the sun was up a day ago. You hope your dishevled appearance will lend weight to your message. \n\n"Thank you for coming," you start as reporters hit buttons and tap excitedly at devices. You explain how big the sky is, and how little of it is monitored on a regular basis. You tell them about how, just this week, Astro turned the LongEye telescope just a fraction of a degree and opened billions of light years of uncharted space for the first time. You explain how they found C/2019-41 before they'd even had the chance to calibrate for deep-space viewing, because it was that close.\n\nWhen you pause before delivering the payload of this conference, one eagre reporter takes it as an opening for questions.\n\n"Will civilians be able to see this new comet?" he asks, live-Tweeting simultaneously. "Can we get the coordinates so interested amateurs know when and where to watch?"\n\n"C/2019-41 is on a collision course," you state flatly. \n\n[[The room explodes.]]
"But sure, but what if..." Patrick watches you as he flounders for words, hoping you'll confirm the rightness of what he's about to say. "If even one other person or government or company has ships like ours, has the capacity to save more people, Ms. Jones? We only have space for thirty-six people. We could be forty. Fifty. A hundred, maybe. Isn't that worth the risk?"\n\n[[[Maybe it is worth the risk.]|The Risk]] [[["I won't risk losing everyone."]|Forge Ahead.]]
A thousand questions. Phones buzzing and scoops being loudly phoned in to employers. They're still excited.\n\n"Where will it hit? How extensive will the damage be? What can we expect? What can be done?"\n\n"Nothing," you say, not bothing to raise your voice. "All projections show a ruined or destroyed planet. Our team recommends evacuation."\n\nOnly a few of them seem to get it, what this means. It's out there now, on Twitter and the web, in the air and on their tongues. \n\n"How many can Utopia take?" someone asks, someone who gets it.\n\n"Five more. Maybe four," you reply. That's when the room goes a little quieter, when some people start to understand. There are ten times that many people in this room alone. \n\nNear the back, someone slips out. A few people notice and follow, which sucks the rest of them towards the door.\n\nYou call security, but nobody answers. You glare at Patrick, who has gone still. [[You knew this would happen.]]\n
